After Dependabot bumped react and react-dom from ^19.2.6 to ^19.2.8 in
devDependencies, two React instances appeared in the test environment:
- The alias pointed to ../../node_modules/react (root, v19.2.6)
- @testing-library/react resolved react-dom/client via local node_modules (v19.2.8)

These mismatched instances caused useState to fail with "Cannot read properties
of null". Updating the aliases to use the local node_modules (v19.2.8) ensures
the component code and react-dom use the same React instance.

Dependabot Fix Assessment

Package: Multiple packages in the all-dependencies group (11 updates)
Scope: devDependency
Workspace: packages/react-web-cli

The key breaking change was react ^19.2.6 → ^19.2.8 and react-dom ^19.2.6 → ^19.2.8.

What changed upstream

  • react@19.2.8 and react-dom@19.2.8 were installed as devDependencies in packages/react-web-cli
  • The root workspace (/) still has react@19.2.6 and react-dom@19.2.6 (runtime deps for the CLI)
  • pnpm installed both versions: v19.2.6 at root node_modules, v19.2.8 at packages/react-web-cli/node_modules

Migration concerns checked

  • Peer dependencies: OK — react@19.2.8 is a minor patch, no breaking peer dep changes
  • Type changes: OK — minor version bump, no API changes
  • Config files: Issue found — vitest.config.ts had hardcoded aliases pointing to root node_modules (v19.2.6)
  • Module format: OK — no ESM/CJS changes
  • React compatibility: Root cause — duplicate React instances in test environment (see below)
  • Monorepo impact: Only affects packages/react-web-cli test environment

What broke

  • Run React Web CLI Unit Tests: TypeError: Cannot read properties of null (reading 'useState') at src/AblyCliTerminal.tsx:185
    • Root cause: vitest.config.ts had resolve.alias pointing react → ../../node_modules/react (root, v19.2.6)
    • @testing-library/react resolved react-dom/client via the local node_modules (v19.2.8), which internally used react@19.2.8
    • The "react-dom" alias covered import "react-dom" but NOT the "react-dom/client" subpath import used by testing-library
    • Result: component code used react@19.2.6 hooks, while react-dom@19.2.8 expected react@19.2.8 — two React instances → hooks dispatcher was null

What was fixed

  • Updated packages/react-web-cli/vitest.config.ts to alias react and react-dom to the local node_modules (v19.2.8) instead of the root (v19.2.6): 
    - react: path.resolve(__dirname, "../../node_modules/react"),

  • The root workspace react@19.2.6 / react-dom@19.2.6 runtime deps are untouched — this fix only affects the test alias config
  • The root deps could also be bumped to ^19.2.8 in a future PR if desired, which would simplify the monorepo's React versioning
  • The 6 skipped tests are pre-existing skips (TTY environment limitations), not new failures
